ICANN’s 63rd Public Meeting

ICANN is holding its 63rd Public Meeting (ICANN63) at the Barcelona International Convention Centre from 20th to 25th October 2018. The meeting is hosted by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Business, through the Secretary of State for Digital Advancement, and Red.es, a public corporate entity responsible for managing the Internet Domain Name Registry for the country code “.es”, and for developing programs to stimulate the digital economy.

Speakers at the Opening Ceremony on the 22th October 2018 included the Spanish Minister of Economy and Business Nadia Calviño; Secretary of State for Digital Advancement Francisco Polo; ICANN Board Chair Cherine Chalaby; and ICANN President and CEO Göran Marby.

The meeting brought together stakeholders from all over the world. Governments, businesses, the civil society, non-governmental organizations, research institutions, technical communities, and others are active participants in the event. The sessions enable discussions and the development of policies on a broad range of Internet-related topics, particularly the Domain Name System and IP addressing, and inform the audience on latest issues of concern to stakeholders.

Among the highlights of ICANN63 was a High Level Governmental Meeting (HLGM) that took place on 22th of October 2018. Ministers, representatives of governments, and delegations from around the world attended the meeting. The day-long HLGM included interactive sessions for ministers and high-level officials to discuss the Internet ecosystem and governance, ICANN‘s work, wider digital issues of global interest, and the role of governments in these areas. The Nigerian delegation was led by Barr Adebayo Shittu, Honourable Minister of Communications, supported by Dr. Isa Ali Pantami Director General/CEO NITDA, representatives from NIRA, government and the Academia

At the ccTLD news session, the presentation from the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) “Creating Domestic Visibility for the .ng Brand”, was made by Mr. Adebiyi Oladipo, a member of the NiRA Board.

Additionally, there were sessions related to the evolution of ICANN policies such as WHOIS, in the light of new data protection rules emerging from the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). These sessions provide opportunities for all to learn more about the work that is being done to adapt existing ICANN contractual requirements and community-developed policies in relation to data protection laws, including a potential model to enable access to non-public user registration data for legitimate purposes.

2018 GULF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY EXHIBITION (GITEX)

The 38th Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX) technology week held at the World trade Centre, Dubai from 14th October to 18th October, 2018. This was Nigeria’s sixth participation at GITEX. Nigeria’s participation at GITEX annually is aimed at promoting investments in the technology sector through the African Investment Forum and showcasing Nigerian Startups and Organizations.

NiRA was at the 2018 GITEX. It was worthy of note that the various Nigerian organizations and startups showcased/hosted their products on website and emails with their registered .ng domain names. The NiRA team was able to promote and guide participants on how to register their .ng domain names and also explained benefits of registering .ng domain names at the conference.

The Nigerian delegation to GITEX 2018 was led by Dr. Isa Ali Patami, Director General/CEO of National Information Technology development Agency (NITDA), Honorable Minister of Communications, who was represented by Mrs. Moni Udo, The Executive Vice Chairman of Nigerian Communication Commission Prof. Umar Danbatta, Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone Mr. Yusuf Kazaure, and the Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on ICT & Cybercrime, Nigeria, Sen. Foster Ogola.

Nigeria also organized the Africa Investment Forum which held on Wednesday 17th of October 2018. The forum attracted ICT stakeholders and investors from across the world. Dr. Pantami in his opening remarks stated that Nigeria’s ICT sector was ready to take reputable space in the sector across the globe.

The Africa Investment Forum focused on technology investments and how the continent could leverage on increasing value to GDP of ICT in most developing economies. Speakers across different verticals discussed ICT diffusion across different sectors that include education, cyber security, startups, retail, energy, healthcare, and finance.

The representative of the Senior Vice President, Dubai World Trade Centre, organizers of GITEX Technology Week 2018, recognized and commended Nigeria and NITDA for consistently promoting ICT across the globe.

At GITEX 2018, over 400 startups representing over 30 countries participated and competed at the 2018 startup movement, amongst which were seven Nigerian startups sponsored by NITDA. Two of the Nigerian Startups, MAX.ng and Arone delivery (Life bank), emerged as part of the semifinalist start-ups.

Social media marketing is the art of promoting your content to people who might be interested. To successfully engage an audience you must understand the type of content they are likely to consume and then tailor your strategies around such contents. This will not only increase engagements but also help you build loyal followers.

Study the Data: Use analytic tools like Google Analytics or Twitter Analytics. Take notes of your most engaging tweets/posts. Ask yourself why they performed well or badly. Was it the caption, the headline, was it because it was off a trending topic, did someone popular/influencer retweet your post, was it on a celebrity, was it the image used or the video? The more you understand your audience the easier it becomes to engage them by creating content they can relate with.

Online video now makes up more than 74% of all online traffic. People now spend over 2.6 more time on pages with video than they do on pages that do not have video. This is a huge traffic stream that can be tapped into by Bloggers. Take the advantages of making video as part of your content strategy.

Improved Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - adding a video to your website increases the chance of the article appearing on the front page of Google search result by 53 times.

Higher engagement - audiences are about 10 times more likely to engage, embed, share, and comment on video content than blogs or related social posts.

Higher Retention Rates - 65% of viewers watch more than ¾ of a video, which is more than we can say about text-based content. So if you have a message to get across (and why wouldn’t you, if you’re creating content?), a video might be the way to go.

Ways to drive free traffic to your blog

  • Social sharing buttons: This should be visible on your homepage and blog posts.
  • Call to Actions (CTAs): invite your audience to like, share or comment on your post.
  • Jump on trends: Creating content around trending topics promotes your blog for free, as people searching for this trending topics will find your posts.
  • Host a contest: Contests such as sweepstakes are a good way of promoting your blog for free.
  • Blog about a celebrity: Celebrities already have huge followings a blogger can tap into by creating content their fans want to read.
  • Guest blogging: Guest bloggers not only create content but also share the content they create with their followers.
  • YouTube: You can use YouTube videos to drive traffic to your site.
  • Social media: You can share your content on social media
  • Newsletters: Sending out newsletters to your subscribers is another source of free traffic. Work on building your mailing lists
  • Online forums: Nairaland is a great place to get free promotion
  • SEO: Optimizing your blog post for search is also a great way to get free promotion.

A very busy month - October 2018

October has been a very busy month for us in NIRA!  There was the 2018 Bloggers Summit, where seasoned personalities in the Industry spoke on how to promote responsible blogging, reduce Fake News, Hate Speeches and create job opportunities, for the active Nigerian youths.

We were visible at the 38th Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX) technology week from 14th to 18th October 2018 in Dubai, supporting the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA)

We also had a good presence at the ICANN63 meeting in Barcelona, where a NiRA member presented a paper on how it has strategically educated the populace on opportunities and activities of the Domain Name Industry and the efforts to promote safer Internet and online child protection in Nigeria.

The month is not ended. From 29th October 2018 to 2nd November 2018, NiRA would be at Nigeria Network Operators Group (ngNOG) meeting in Lagos, mounting a track on “Content Distribution, Domain names and Web Hosting”. We do have seasoned trainers lined up for the workshop.

As we approach the 150,000 domains mark, we will continue to collaborate with all stakeholders to achieve our immediate target of 1million active domain names. It may look very far, but we are not relenting in our efforts.

We will be taking the switch.to.ng campaign to all geopolitical regions, working in conjunction with NITDA, and we believe this will year good fruits.
