THE NIGERIAN NETWORK OPERATORS GROUP (ngNOG) 2016 REPORT

The Nigerian Network Operators Group (ngNOG) Conference and workshop 2016 held on Monday 31st of October, to 5th November, 2016 respectively at RockRiew Royale hotel and Hotel Reno in Abuja.

During the Nigerian Network Operators Group (ngNOG) conference and workshop, the contributions of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) in the ICT ecosystem were highlighted and appreciated.

Representatives of several Nigerian universities were in attendance at the forum for cooperation and exchange of technical information between operators of Internet-connected networks in Nigeria. The presence of highly placed academicians from the various universities in the country is highly commendable. I appreciate the doggedness of the Universities to ensure their online presence with their .ng domain names and online presence. It is highly commendable. Almost, if not all Nigerian universities have announced their presence online and are online with their .ng domain names.  It was a conscious decision and effort by the university community to register their .ng domain names. This is a patriotic effort as well as economic decision. This is the same effort expected of other sectors in Nigeria.

The “Domain Name Business” track at the ngNOG debuted at the 11th Network Technology Workshop and there was a Ganeti Clustering presentation by NiRA. We also had presentations from representatives from Icecool Contracts Limited and Whogohost.

The conference served as the plenary meeting/event of the Nigerian Network Operators Group (ngNOG) Workshop. The Workshop, an annual event held usually in October/November, is a capacity building activity/program of ICT personnel and other stakeholders in Nigeria. NIRA was represented. The workshop featured participants/ various stakeholders of ngICT Forum and experts/resource persons from the various fields of ICT.

The Nigerian Network Operators Group (ngNOG) has been around for 11years since its creation from the parent organization of African Network Operators Group (AfNOG). The keynote address was given by Dr. Wale Adedokun, who spoke on the origin of ngNOG. It was discovered that at most AfNOG workshops that Nigerians were always in majority. With the existence of ngNOG, Nigerians can obtain the required technical ICT trainings at a lower cost and reduce capital flight. Since inception the ngNOG workshop was held on university campuses due to its academic nature but this year’s edition in Abuja is the first to take place outside of a campus due to its all-inclusive nature.
