eNigeria

The 9th Edition of the eNigeria conference held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, Nigeria with the theme “Leveraging ICT Innovation for Economic Diversification”, from 22nd to 24th November 2016. On the first day of the conference, 22nd November 2016, we had the Opening address from the Special Guest of Honour, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, GCON, Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria. The welcome remarks was from Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, PhD., Director General /CEO, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). We also had Barrister Abdul-Raheem Adebayo Shittu, Honourable Minister, Federal Ministry of Communications and a host of other dignitaries at the first day of the eNigeria 2016 conference.

eNigeria is an annual international Information Technology (IT) conference organized by NITDA, together with its partners, including the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA). The conference brings together relevant stakeholders from the private, public and non-governmental sectors and the international community. Bearing in mind the dwindling national income generated from the sale of oil and gas industry and the recession staring us in the face, the theme for the 2016 conference was apt and the aim of the conference was to explore credible alternatives for economic diversification and sustainable development in Nigeria. The Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria emphasized on the need to foster development and growth of Information Technology in Nigeria.

It is no longer news that Nigeria needs other sources of income and agriculture is not only the veritable source. Lots of income can be generated from IT related activities/businesses. We have been severally informed of all possibilities that are abounding in IT related activities. One of these is the domain name business. The domain name business can be carried out by NiRA Accredited Registrars and their resellers. There are many ancillary businesses associated with the DNS Industry.

Whilst the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) is the Registry for the .ng Internet Domain Names and maintains the database of names registered in the .ng country code Top Level Domain, operating the 3 R (Registry/Registrar/Registrant) model of operations, the domain names are registered through NiRA Accredited Registrars. For a NiRA Accredited Registrar, use the link http://www.nira.org.ng/ng-registrars.

Awareness must be created on all other sources of income generation using the ICT and we advocate the domestication of these ICT solutions.

The registry for .ng ccTLD, continues to create awareness of and promulgate the .ng brand.

The latest visibility drive is the BRT advert placements on the Ikorodu to CMS axis/route in Lagos State. Keep an eye out for these adverts. We need to see .ng domain name websites promoting Nigerian businesses and local contents. Those not on .ng, need to switchto.ng.

For more information about the switch to .ng campaign please visit www.switchto.ng website dedicated to guide all for the switch.

Your President,

Rev’d Sunday Folayan
