NIRA and EU GDPR

NIRA’s EU GDPR implementation is directly tied to CoCCA, to the Registry Software that NIRA runs. CoCCA, in its EU GDPR compliance roadmap had earlier customized its Registry Software in compliance with the EU GDPR and held several discussions with its clients, including NIRA to verify this compliance.

We are confident that the software version that we currently run, in which we are able to set the basic parameters for EU registrars and registrants, is compliant with the basic rules, and we are assured that from time to time, there will be reviews of what has been implemented.

NiRA Accredited Registrars are still expected to provide relevant details with the applications for domain name registrations. The technical and billing information for these set of registrars and registrants are no longer displayed via WHOIS lookup.

As for their registrant and admin records via the WHOIS lookup, only the domain ID, contact name and organization can be displayed. Any EU registrant, whose country is not an EU country, does not receive the treatment for EU registrant. For contacts outside the EU, the settings remain the same. Now, the NiRA WHOIS displays minimal information/details for EU Registrants.

We believe that this action will give our EU Registrars the confidence they need to continue to push .ng domains to Registrants within the European Union, and other regions of the world.

I remain at your service.

Rev’d Sunday Folayan

President, NIRA Executive Board
