NITDA ISSUES GUIDELINE FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF PERSONAL DATA BY PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA

On the 17th May 2020, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) issued a press release on ‘Guideline for the Management of Personal Data By Public Institutions in Nigeria’. The issued guideline is supplementary regulation to the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), 2019.

This new guideline is to reinforce the implementation of the NDPR as all the principles and provisions of the NDPR remain valid and applicable to all Nigerians including public institutions.  It also requires the processing of all personal data of Nigerians and Data Subjects in Nigeria by public institutions and co-owned government entities in conformity with the highest standards and best practices. The use of secure technology and automated processes for personal data by Public Institutions is mandatory in line with the requirements of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, championed by Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami), FNCS, FBCS, FIIM, the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy.
