Putting Nigeria First Online: Highlights from the First .ng Webinar Series

The debut session of the .ng Webinar Series delivered on its promise to spark meaningful conversations and raise public and stakeholder awareness around the relevance of the .ng domain as a national digital asset. With the theme “Putting Nigeria First in the Digital Age: Why .ng Matters,” the webinar unpacked important narratives around digital policy, ownership, and the strategic role of .ng in Nigeria’s digital transformation.

Kicking off the session was Oluwaseyi Onasanya, Chief Operating Officer of NiRA and co-host of the series, who emphasized the need for continued conversations that challenge outdated views and highlight the .ng domain as an inclusive, transformative tool for all Nigerians, from businesses and institutions to creators and government entities.

In his welcome address, Adesola Akinsanya, President of NiRA, made a compelling case for why .ng should be seen not just as a technical or marketing asset, but as critical digital infrastructure. Drawing comparisons with how other countries use their country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs) to power economic growth, identity, and resilience, he called for policies and public engagement that reposition .ng as a national priority. “Policies are key to what we want to achieve,” he said. “But people must first see .ng as a digital tool that belongs to all of us.”

Delivering the keynote, Dr. Tope Fasua, Special Adviser to the President on Economic Affairs, spotlighted government efforts to integrate the .ng domain into Nigeria’s national digital strategy. “This is an opportunity to rebrand Nigeria online,” he stated. “The .ng domain is more than a web address; it’s a cultural and economic gateway for Nigerians at home and abroad.” He stressed that in today’s data-driven world, owning and managing one’s digital assets, from content to domains, is essential for sovereignty and sustainable growth.

The panel discussion, moderated by Peter Oluka, Editor at TechEconomy, brought together experts including Muhammed Rudman (MD/CEO, IXPN), Abibat Olatunji (Executive Board Director, NiRA), and Agim Ikwen (CTO, Webguru.ng). The panel explored how the .ng domain continues to shape Nigeria’s DNS ecosystem and contributes to digital economic growth. From infrastructure to innovation, they shared insights on practical ways to increase .ng adoption and improve public understanding of its value.

The webinar was not only informative but also interactive, with attendees engaging actively in Q&A sessions, polls, and live chat discussions.

Key Takeaways:

  • The .ng domain must be seen as national digital infrastructure, not just a marketing or technical tool.
  • Policies alone won’t drive adoption — public perception and education are equally critical.
  • .ng represents a unique opportunity to brand Nigeria online, empower digital entrepreneurs, and build trust globally.
  • Data ownership and internet identity are increasingly linked—and .ng helps Nigerians control both.

The .ng Webinar Series will continue to host dynamic conversations and bring together thought leaders, stakeholders, and internet users across the country to ensure that Nigeria not only thrives online but also owns its presence with pride.
