Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) is responsible for maintaining the database of registered names in the .ng country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) namespace in the public interest of Nigeria and the global internet community. Like the currency, the Naira and dialing code +234, .ng is Nigerian identity online. Domains that are registered on this domain string, therefore, have several benefits which include geo-targeting and the reduction of capital flight as well as contribution to the local economy.
The price reduction of premium domain names from N1,500,000.00 to N100,000.00 which was announced in the 4th quarter of 2022, is significant. As a direct result of the review, over one hundred (100), premium domain names have been registered. Hopefully in the coming weeks, as more Accredited Registrars update their various platforms, the price reduction on the purchase of .ng premium domain names would achieve the desired result of increasing the number of active .ng domains online, promoting the nation’s ccTLD.
There have been many efforts by NiRA, to continually increase access to .ng domains, for the promotion of expertise and businesses online. NiRA partners with over 80 organisations known as its Registrars and regularly engages these organisations to better understand the market. In recent times, initiatives such as the opening of hitherto closed .ng strings such as .net.ng have greatly increased the number of businesses that can make themselves available online using a .ng domain. NiRA will continue to innovate and promote .ng until it comes to the top of mind anytime a consideration is made for the purchase of domain names.
